Burger Week 2014: Day 1

First day of Burger Week was fantastic! My food team and I did a little Dartmouth crawl, but I got a head start at 11am today when some school friends detoured to Cheese Curds with me for lunch. The CC Burger Week Special is a triple cheese, bacon and mushroom melt with crispy Cajun onion crisps. I thought this was going to be a triple burger, but it was actually just a single with triple cheese, perfectly cooked mushroom chunks and some bacon. You pay $9, Cheese Curds donates $5 to FEED Nova Scotia! Dig it? It’s awesome! This burger was loved by all, and a great way to kick off Halifax Burger Week!

After school I met up with some friends at Celtic Corner to continue the Dartmouth Edition of my Burger Week patrol – I won the title of “Burger Ambassador” in a Coast contest, and I take this role seriously ; )

Celtic Corner’s Trio is eight ounces of Angus beef with bacon and cheddar cheese for $5. MGyver described it as a baseline burger; a fine standard to which any aspiring burger should look up. It was nice and beefy, and just generally a good pub burger.

Jameson’s Irish House and Grill is located in a strip mall, but was hand-built by owner Chris Smith & co., who felt that the area needed a neighbourhood pub with good food and atmosphere. I have to say, he certainly accomplished this! Cole Harbour is lucky to have this cozy little pub/restaurant. As for the burger, it is an Irish Curry Burger infused with curry, cilantro, shallots, ginger and Greek yogurt, topped with with a mango and cucumber salsa, garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato. It is delicious and a great deal for $5! The patty may have been a wee bit small, but the flavours were spot on and we enjoyed the place so much that we all agreed to come back again.

We ended the night at Ceilidh’s Pub on the Waverly Road. $8 got us Ceilidh’s Gourmet Nacho Burger: Angus beef, stuffed with salsa and cheddar cheese, spicy ketchup mayo, corn chips, sliced tomato and Caesar-dressed lettuce. This may have been the hit of the night! It actually tasted like nachos, thanks to the corn chips infused right into the patty which also throbbed with cheesy goodness! There was a quiz night going on when we arrived and we were welcomed with opened arms, despite not being neighbourhood regulars. What a nice place, and what a great burger!

I ate some really good burgers today and discovered some real gems. It was exciting to check out places I had never been before, and to stuff as many burgers into my belly as it could handle (don’t worry, health nuts, most of these were cut in half). It is now way past my bed time, but I am dedicated to my blogger’s duty, and also that of Burger Ambassador, to share these stories and pictures with you.

Tomorrow will bring about new burgers and more excitement so stay tuned! What burgers have you been eating? What is your fav so far? Comment below or Tweet me: @shipwrekkt #burgerweek #burgerlove!
