Brunch at The Stubborn Goat

Well, the plan was to go to the Coastal but due to street maintenance/construction the Coastal was closed for the day. So my bro and I decided to u-turn back downtown to The Stubborn Goat because I heard tell of some new menu items.

My last Stubborn Goat brunch post mainly concerned the chicken and waffles, and I complained about the loaded fries for a bit. This time I eagerly ordered the brand new chilaquiles!

Chilaquiles are a traditional Mexican breakfast dish, consisting of lightly fried corn tortillas cooked with sauce. Typically this was a way to use stale tortillas, although The Stubborn Goat skips this step and uses nacho chips. The tortilla strips are traditionally layered or “scrambled” with some combination of salsa or sauce, meat, cheese and egg.

The Stubborn Goat’s version involves corn salsa, black beans, Alysford feta, sunny side up eggs, guacamole and housemade chili sauce. – $15

At first I wasn’t sure how this was gonna work. The nacho chips were fully intact and very crunchy, so I took my utensils and chopped and smashed and mixed everything up. The eggs were a perfect sunnyside and my yolks leaked into the mixture, which, after a bit of bashing around, became kind of an al dente. I enjoyed the soggycrisp chips smothered in Mexican flavours.

The only thing I’d add would maybe be some shredded meat… mole duck anyone?

My bro ordered the bacon eggs benny ($13). The eggs were cooked perfectly – the whites were perfectly solidified and the yolks were perfectly runny. These were combined with Oulton’s smoked bacon and housemade biscuits, which were met with nodding approval. The Hollandaise, he said, was “just okay”.

The Stubborn Goat sticks to French fries for its brunch dishes, which sort of bridges the gap between breakfast and lunch. We upgraded to the truffle fries because we were already in the know on this one (Get the truffle fries).

The Stubborn Caesar ($7) was okay, but came with olives AND a spicy bean! A bacon Caesar is also available on the brunch drink menu (I love it when there is a brunch drink menu!) We also ordered coffees, which were decent and refilled constantly. My bro’s orange juice was satisfactorily sizable.

This was a pretty damn good brunch, and it involved no lines or crowds. Just a decent pub crowd on a Sunday afternoon.
