Brunch at the Mic Mac Tavern

The Mic Mac Bar & Grill (or Mic Mac Tavern, as the locals say) is known for its steaks and pub food. It is one of Dartmouth’s most beloved institutions and people have been known to cross the harbour for it.

Brunch, as defined as breakfast and/or lunch, is available at the Mic Mac everyday – EXCEPT for the eggs benny, which is only available on weekends. Also, the steak ‘n’ eggs is a dollar cheaper on weekends. So keep that in mind.

MY definition of brunch is fancy breakfast, so I shook my head as my father ordered the seafood platter ($21) which came with 2 pieces of haddock (battered or pan fried), fried clams and some good lookin’ scallops. My Dad, always the seafood critic, was quite impressed with his meal. As sort of a Father’s Day gift to him, I kept my camera away from his plate.

My bro had the steak ‘n’ eggs, which stars the Mic Mac’s 7oz bacon wrapped filet mignon. Yum. You simply can’t go wrong with this.

My Mom ordered the fish cake breakfast, which came with fried eggs, baked beans, chow chow and toast. These fish cakes won gold in the Coast’s 2013 Best of Food Survey, so I stole a couple nibbles. They were golden brown on the outside, soft and moist with chunks of fish and flavoured with some green herb I couldn’t put my finger on. I will be coming back to investigate these further…

As for my eggs benny…

Well, it was heavy. I’m accustomed to my eggs benny being a little more dainty, but that’s not to say bigger isn’t better. The Hollandaise was just so thick and plentiful, quite lemony and just .. everywhere. The ham was thick-cut, grilled home-style ham, but not particularly flavourful. I asked for runny eggs but they were medium. That’s probably what hurt the most.

A bite of benny.
A bite of benny.

The spiced home fries were crispy and decent, but I couldn’t finish them because the benny had laid claim to my stomach.

Just because I did not enjoy this dish does not mean that you won’t. Hell, I didn’t like the Pub Club at the Moustache and it has a huge following. But whereas I have never been terribly impressed with the food at Your Father’s Moustache, I think the food at the Mic Mac Tavern is top notch. We ordered 4 meals this afternoon and 3 of them were righteous.

For the truly reckless carnivore – check this out:  The Mic Mac “Big Hungry” Breakfast features an AAA steak, bacon, ham AND sausage with 2 eggs and home fries. This can all be yours for $17.50. Truly an amazing menu option.

But I think I’ll stick to the fish cakes from now on – I say, lethargically, from my computer.

Happy Father’s Day!

  1. I am disappointed to hear that the eggs were not runny.
This is Key to the Eggs Benny……If there is not yolk with the hollandaise sauce…
Even without the description the Fish cakes looked the best….I guess it also looks like the right amount of food.
